Pantone’s Colors of the Year Satisfy both: Realists and Optimists

Delivering a new message for 2021.

Every year around this blurry last week in December, I get excited for a few things: hot chocolate, lazy mornings on the couch and the Pantone color of the year selection.

For the past 20 years, the Pantone Color of the Year sets the tone and feeling of the upcoming year.

This selection, voted by a panel of judges and trend analysis which will influence home décor, fashion and other elements of design.

Last year the color for 2020 was “Classic Blue”.

From the swatch below — what does it mean to you?

Pantone — Classic Blue

This is a deep blue, or azure if you will. It reminded me of the branding from IBM from the late 90’s.

This dulled muted blue represented classic times, dependency and consistency, all of which is the antithesis of 2020.

Since 2020 was the nightmare we all couldn’t have predicted, uniquely, Pantone has brought two unique colors together for 2021:
