I have to write about Karl and how he has affected my life even though I’ve never really owned a piece of Chanel physically. I know that fashion will never be the same again based on the news I received this morning of Karl Lagerfeld’s passing.

If you’re Canadian, you might remember watching Fashion Television on CityTV on Saturdays at 6 p.m. I would do so waiting for my mother to come home from her retail job because she worked (and still does) on Saturdays. Even after working 8 hour days, she would stress the idea of always ensuring to look put together which made a hard imprint on my 10 year old self.

Week upon week, I would watch the Fashion Television models strut their stuff down the runway. The designers always closing the show and I would wait for that pop out of the curtain from Karl. From those moments on, I always saw myself going to work in the fashion industry in New York City — and I did.

When I was 21, I went to New York City to work in a fashion showroom. This is where the buyers would walk in and pick their pieces to buy for the upcoming season from all of the brands displayed. Since I was an unpaid intern, my job consisted getting coffee was running samples back and from Barney’s, Saks and back to the showroom.
